“Adversity does not build character, it reveals it.” — James Lane Allen.

A few years back one MNC company’s Senior Vice President was addressing employees during an induction training programme. He spoke on how they secured top ranking in Great Place to Work, one of the value commitments towards employee and bragged about the various prestigious awards received by the company for their talent management practices. He concluded by saying “Employees are our asset”. In April 2020 in the same company, a lot of employees were given pink slip and treated below their dignity. Some employees said that although the Sr VP HR had claimed that the employees were asset but now they are treating us as a liability. All these values and Great Place to Work practices remained on paper.

On contrary, a Mumbai based equity discount broking firm never applied for Great Place to Work, neither they have well-written values. However, the CEO assured all the employees that they need not worry about the current circumstances, The company would take care of them all. As on date, they have not reduced salary nor have they given pink slip to their employees. A few employees said, “We were thinking our infrastructure was not like IT companies, and we didn’t have a big brand name. Rather than focusing on the caring nature of the CEO, we were comparing ourselves with big brands. We will never forget the support provided by the CEO during this difficult time”.

Authentic leadership demonstrated by the CEO created the company’s brand in the minds of its employees without Great Place to Work ranking and flashy value statements!
